This is my second Garmin 260W. I use it for business. My wife is always borrowing mine for shopping. So I got another one and gave her the first one that had all her favorite shopping places on file.
My only complaint - and this would be true of any GPS - is that you can get a city update but not a state or county up date. I guess that the states don't update their own systems when a new road or shopping center is built.

I'm quite satisfied with the device itself. I have a couple of trips under my belt now and haven't got lost yet. Found a few restaurants and gas when needed so it works fine.
The USB cable to attach the unit to a PC was not included with the 260W and is required to register the unit and update the internal OS software as well as the map updates. I called Garmin to see if I could register the unit on the phone and was told no you have to buy the cable to register. What a great way to make your customers "rip off" alerts start going off..
You can go the website to download map updates but unless you are registered which you can't do without the cable you get nowhere.
It just seems like a sleazy way to make you buy an accessory that is necessary to register the product especially since USB cables are so cheap these days. I got a cable for $5 from Ebay no problem. I would not buy it from the manufacturer at inflated prices on principal, all I'm saying is, if it's necessary include it in the box. The wider screen is a definite advantage, and the optional "bean bag" mount for the dash works well. There are a very wide range of voice options (accents, level of detail) but aside from that this is extremely easy to use and intuitive. I bought it for my wife and she has been enchanted with it--and greatly relieved at how easy it is to use. I remain (or hope I remain) #1 in her heart but it is clearly now because I was thoughtful enough to introduce her to her new best buddy.

I travel in my job and need a GPS to help me get around. In my humlbe opinion, the Garmin 260W is a great bargain for the money. The screen is large enough to see and the turn-by-turn directions are easy to follow. Turning on specifc streets as directed (instead of a generic "turn right" or "turn left") and being able to see where the next turn really helps also.

Main complaint: occasionally, there has been a wrong direction given, but these have been few and far between.

Still, a great bargain. If you are looking for a low-cost, high-quality GPS, the Garmin 260W is the one!

I have had my garmin nuvi 260w for about a month now and have used it several times (including a trip to Canada where I was totally unfamiliar with the area). This particular garmin was recommended to me by a friend who has one and loves it. I found that my garmin is very easy to use. I love the touch screen. I have had navigation systems that came built into my cars and the garmin is MUCH easier to use than the previous built in ones that I have used. Because of the ease of the touch screen, I am able to put in the information much quicker than with other nav systems I have used that were not touch screen. The wider screen is also helpful and makes viewing the screen quicker so that you only have to take your eyes off the road for a second to view where you are and where you need to go.

Some users had complained about long inital boot time so i used a stop watch and the first boot took 2min 32 seconds i was amazed. if i turn it on it takes no longer than 30 seconds to start up all around town i live in a medium size city with 200,000 people in the city limits and another 200,000 in the direct surrounding area. I am a first time GPS user. I read a lot of reviews including Consumer Reports online and decided to try the Garmin. All websites that review this brand seem to favor it. I really did not want all the bells and whistles. Just a basic model. I love this GPS. I was able to start using it immediately out of the box without really reading the quickstart book! It is very easy to use, simple instructions. I opted for the widescreen and am glad I did. It is very easily seen, even if you just have it laying in the passenger seat of the car. This unit does not come with a AC Adapter, however, my cell phone charger fit it perfectly so I am using it to charge at home, and saved 25.00 by not buying one! Also, you need to buy a USB cable for the computer, but if you have a small point and shoot digital camera you probably already have one laying around the house that will work, I did. After I purchased this I went to Garmin.com and downloaded all updates and maps for this model. It took over 2 hours for the nagivator and almost 2 hours for the maps. Give yourself plenty of time to do this. My computer is new and pretty fast, but it seems to take forever. But everything seems to be current so far. I do think the sound quality could be a little better on the speaker of the GPS. I also think they should throw in an inexpensive carrying case for the GPS! Its satellite reception is not great! it takes almost 5 mins to get reception.. It easily looses its signal in tunnels.. i have been lost many times in the nightmarish roads/tunnels of Boston (MA)..
I should also commend it for finding the shortest route many many times and bringing me back home!

Another brand's GPS that I used with a rental car showed the Points of Interests as icons on the map all the time as you drove. This was great. You could think about your options for a gas station as you drove down the freeway. The 260w does not do this. You have to push buttons to select gas stations and then you get a list with the nearest one at the top. (You can't, or shouldn't, operate the menus while driving.) 3 different employees in 2 different stores I told this to were surprised. One didn't believe me and tried to show me this feature, but after going through the menus finally said, "That's odd." For me it was a complete deal breaker. This is a common feature in other brands. The spoken function of this GPS is sometimes (often) a little hard to understand especially names called out of the streets.
When driving you do not want to take your eyes off the road , and it would be nice to depend totally on the spoken instructions. I think the amplifier and speaker section of this 260w GPS must be miniscule , for if you turn up the volume to compensate for engine noise in the car ,the sound becomes distorted.I wish I had spent a little more money and gotten a model that wirelessly transmit directions through the car radio.
By the way it used to be unlawfull in California to attach any object to the windshield , necessitated placing the unit at some great distance
from the drivers side as, in my Subaru Legacy, to find a flat surfce for mounting. I have since been informed that the California law has been changed to now allow

As a first time user, I purchased the Garmin Nuvi 260W after reading how high it was rated in a consumer article. After receiving the unit, I am sold on it. First, the screen is clear and easy to understand. It takes only moments to locate a satellite. The spoken directions are clear and precise. The funny thing is that it can't distinguish the abbreviation of DR to mean Drive. It calls DR Doctor. So, we are told to turn onto Oak Doctor. It's lightweight, easy to store and so far has helped us navigate to addresses we would have had a difficult time finding. My only problem is that all cables are not included. You do not get the cable to hook into the computer to register or upgrade. Also, it would have been nice to have had at least a soft case included.

I just got my second Garmin GPS Nuvi 260W today. I wanted to buy this one only because of two reasons. 1) The wide and bigger screen makes it easy for me to read the text on the screen while driving. 2) The Text to speech feature which will help me to focus on driving not reading to the text or be confused about the exits some times as my Street Pilot i5 does. The only reason I gave 4 stars is the lady voice is not as good as it is my 3 years old Street Pilot i5, and she speaks so fast. Speakers vibrate and you can feel it when test to speech come in the action. Overall I am safisfied with this unit. My wife will carry this one I would use my old buddy Street Pilot i5 for next 3 years at least. Wow...! This is an amazing device!! I wanted a GPS unit that had some good features but wasn't going to empty my wallet. I found it with the Nuvi 260W.
It has a nice, readable screen (even for someone who has to wear glasses). Touch sensitive display and great features.
It worked very well right out of the box. I like the fact that it is a self-sufficient device that does NOT require connecting it to a computer to program it.
It is very user-friendly and easy to set up. I was able to do so right in the parking lot of the store where I purchased it.
The instruction manual is pretty limited. I think it might be a problem for people who are not technically inclined or comfortable with gadgets.
I also like that Garmin has a nice website I can go to and get additional features to download (for free- different vehicle icons, different voices, etc).

Oh yeah, and if you do need to connect it to a computer to update maps or whatever, it is Mac and Windows compatible!! (via USB). You do have to go to the Garmin site to download the "garmin communicator" program for the device to be "visible" to your computer.

Its very accurate with the info on the display (I drove up north with it last weekend) I was really impressed with the fact that the ETA it showed was accurate to within about 2 minutes of my actual arrival time at my destination.

It also has some great features such as your location in proximity to gas stations/police/hospitals/food, and other points of interest.

It has a "voice" spoken announcements as to where to turn and other helpful info. "Turn right at Main Street". That's nice! Good for when you can't take your eyes off the road but need to know when to turn (or whatever).

My only negative comment is that the internal battery does NOT last as long as the manufacturer spec indicates (they say 5 hours, mine went dead after about three hours). But since I had the car charger with me, that wasn't a huge problem.

I purchased this unit a few weeks ago and have had no problems. I live in a very remote area in Southern Mississippi and the Nuvi 260w picks up a satellite in a matter of seconds. I have the 2009 map and it lists some of the POIs. For a sub $200 unit, it is a terrific buy. It speaks the street names and is pretty accurate.

I did a bit of investigating before purchasing the gps unit, and was concerned that some of the reviews complained about the length of time to acquire a satellite signal. For me, it is almost instantaneous. The 205w was my next choice, but I got the 260w for about 20% cheaper for about the same features. Just remember, the unit may pick up a signal quicker/slower depending on where you live in the US. Also, register your unit on garmin.com. Garmin's customer service is excellent.

I resisted getting this type of GPS for years. I have had two Magellans, and my Meridian Green has been on my dash for six years now. But I used that mostly for Geocaching. Moving to Maine (from CA), and just getting around is a challenge. When my sig other bought one the Nuvi 260 3.5 because he travels so much for work, I got to play with it. The more I used it, the more I wanted one for my car.
What I love most about it: that it allows me to take routes I might not know exist, and it speaks out all of the street names. This becomes VERY important in a state where a road can have a different name depending on which township you are driving through.
I have only had one problem, and it scared the hell out of me. I typed in an address, and was traveling at night. The GPS routed me through some pretty back-woods roads, and I ended up on a dirt road not even on the county map. I drive a 2WD vehicle, so when I realized that I was heading off-road into mud, I stopped, and the GPS immediately spoke: "Recalculating". Oh crap. I had to turn around and turned out I was three miles out of my way. She did eventually route me to the correct spot, but that was a pucker-factor moment.

I've owned three Garmin GPS's over the years, beginning with a bare-bones "text only" unit back when these things were still for the hobbyist. My second had a crude black and white map but most of the rural roads were missing. The Garmin Nuvi 206W, by contrast, is worlds away from those early units. The maps are very complete and accurate (and can be upgraded when they're not).
For those who've complained about slow acquisition of the satellites, I've not found this to be the case. When you first buy the unit (or haven't used it in some time), it needs to soak up current almanac (and ephermeris) data. Just plug it in and move your car to your driveway and let it sit there for a while (half an hour, say) and you'll be ready to go. Otherwise, I've found start-up, even after the unit is powered down, to be very fast (30 seconds or so). I'd call this GPS receiver "hot" and I've not found this hesitation when starting up. Never!
The routing the unit does is sometimes a little strange but that's true of all computerized routing (try it on any popular website). The Garmin does a great job of recalculating your route if you make an unspecified turn.

I received this unit in the mail yesterday from one of the Amazon suppliers. Today I check on Amazon and I find that the price has dropped since I bought mine. Is that supposed to make customers feel good about this company ?

Since the arrival of the unit yesterday, I spent more than a few frustrating moments with it. Here are the worst:

The unit comes without an a/c adaptor (this would be "optional"). Well, to do any of the set-up at home, not to speak of registering the unit on your computer, you need the adaptor. I ran out to Radio Shack (those crooks !) and they charged me $30 for this piece of equipment. True, I could have waited a week and bought it on line for half of that, but that would be an extra week. I think that it's chintzy of these Garmin people, to say the very least, not to include the adaptor in the first place. Or the USB cord needed to connect to your computer (I had an extra one of those around the house, thank God).

After I did the original set-up, and then waited an excruciatingly long time for the satellite connection in my back yard, I connected to Garmin by computer and did what they tell you to do: register the new purchase. What a shock to the system to go through that procedure ! The registration, and the "free" download of updated maps (why didn't the unit come updated to begin with ?) will take "hours," Garmin warns. Well, it took me about an hour and a half. Their recommended system of downloading simply stopped in the middle, and their less recommended system took long enough ... I started out with a Mio Moov GPS and was happy with it except I decided I wanted the larger format screen (4.3). After research, I bought the Garmin Nuvi 260W. Overall, it does a good job.

However, it sometimes takes several minutes to acquire the satellites even in completely open areas. And it will not find satellites indoors. The MIO Moov did.

It also lacks some niceties that the Mio Moov had such as displaying the posted speed limit and showing POIs such as gas stations right on the main map. You have to go to the POI maps to see them.

Just few days before a family trip, I purchased this GPS to save me some time on map reading and trip planning (navigating to the next "point of interest" efficiently). I was considering TomTom ONE XL-S 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator initially, but switched to Garmin 260W after hearing positive comments on Garmin GPS products from co-workers. This GPS provides 2 major features I was looking for - the 4.3-inch screen and spoken-street-names. They are the 2 features that matter most to me when driving. A bit of a pain to charge since I didn't get the optional AC charger cord. Left it hooked up in the car while I drove around before I started using it regularly. Used my camera USB connector to get to Garmin to register and get the latest version of the maps, It took about four hours at DSL speeds to get the newest maps onto the unit. Tried it around town and I like the voice feature. It has directed me to several places and gets me back home. Not sure the way it thinks, but it does not always use the most efficient route. Using a rural address several miles from here it directed me to a location two miles down the road, but at least it sent me down the right road. I will use it for travelling and I expect that it will get me through cities and towns without getting me lost. Hi,

I bought my GPS in Sept 08. I loved the large screen and it looked very easy to use. At first, it worked great: it was finding the satellites within a few seconds and calculated the trips very fast and accurately. However, over time, it took it longer and longer to find the satellites. I installed the latest firmware. What a mistake! It takes easily one minute or two to find the satellites, and when I take by mistake a wrong turn / road, it takes a few (looooong) seconds to recalculate the trip. I should have never installed the latest firmware.

A few things could be improved on this product:
- I should be able to set up a few favorites icons and the icons should be smaller so that I can view more icons on a screen
- the list of the restaurants / shops should be updated for free every few months.
- when driving in the city, it does not calculate accurately the time because it does not take into account the traffic lights.

I bought Garmin Nuvi 200 series model, which made my life miserable. I goes off when ever its like even with power on and I a driving. The customer support is another terrible thing, any time I call them avg wait time is 35-40 mins. Guess what? One day have literally waited for 40 mins and no one picked up the phone. When I dropped email then the return email once per day that too with crap comments nothing matches your actual problem.

I bought the 260W after weeks of online research between Garmin, Magellan and TomTom. Ultimately I bought this unit because it seemed to have the best overall reviews for units in this price range as well as the Garmin "name".

Being something of a perfectionist there are only a few quirks that kept me from giving it a five star rating. Whether it is Garmin or just this model or just this mine, the first thing I found is that when it gives direction to a "Drive" it pronounces it as "Doctor" (from Dr. no doubt). So Oakwood Drive is spoken Oakwood Doctor. A minor nuisance but still a flaw. Another small issue I have is that when the unit tells you to turn right on Oakwood Drive (as an example)it doesn't give you an audible "beep" of any sort. I only found this problematic one night as approaching the street only to find two streets very close to one another and the one I wanted to turn on - had lost its street sign. The mapping on it is very good so I was able to focus on the map and see the correct street but had it an audible tone of some sort I wouldn't have had to take my eyes off the driving.

Having commented on the small negatives, I find the unit to be extremely accurate and very intuitive to set up right out of the box and use. I've had no problems with locking in on satellites very quickly as some reviewers have commented. The screen brightness is adjustable and works pretty good in all lighting. It has an SD memory card slot which is cool but can't imagine I'd have a slide show of pictures going while driving. A note on "text to speech". If this is your first GPS - make sure no matter what you buy - you have it. It makes all the difference in the world between hearing "turn right in five hundred feet" and "turn right on Oak Lane".

You can download the latest maps (NOTE: THE USB CABLE NEEDED DOES NOT COME IN THE PACKAGE. I BOUGHT MINE HERE ON AMAZON SEPARATELY FOR MAYBE $5), a couple of other voices (not much selection there), other car icons etc..., from the Garmin website.

The windshield mount works perfectly although I purchased a weighted dash pad for mounting as I don't like something up on my windshield.

All in all a great little unit: good maps, lots of points of interests, very easy to use right out of the box, accurate,(seems more accurate than my son's Magellan) and easy to read while driving. A note on customer service: I had problems downloading the latest maps so wrote them for help. They replied promptly with detailed instructions. It was something I was doing wrong. I purchased a 260W last September for my wife. At first she was reluctant because she does not consider herself to be a "computer" person. While we were on a trip a few days later, she removed the unit from the windshield mount and began to explore its options as we drove down the highway. Within an hour, she was comfortable navigating through the various feaures of this unit. She is now my go-to person when I have questions about the unit. It has given my wife confidence to travel to adjoining states to vist friends and family. In just a few months, it has easily paid for itself in the tremendous level of convenience afforded to us.

Since I am not a technical person, I will keep this review simple. This unit can only help you with the information it has stored in its data base. Some cities have a much better data base than others. On a recent visit to Wilmington NC, our GPS unit could hardly locate anything by name or address. Although we were very disappointed, we realized that details of this area are not yet plentiful by the manufacturer. In other cities along the east coast, this unit will find almost anything you ask it to.

When I researched this unit, I was looking for a widescreen Garmin unit that did not have all the extras (bluetooth, MP-5 conncections, cellphone, etc.) that I would not use. The only option this 260W has that many folks would not want is the ability to store photographs. If you are looking for a widescreen GPS with few bells and whistles, this and the 265W (updated version of 260W) are the ones to buy.

Don't forget to pursue updates through Garmin's website. They are a little pricey but well worth it. And don't expect each update to show all the most recent changes. Interstate 85 and 40 come through our hometown and several big changes made in the layout of these highways over a year ago are still not in any of the Garmin updates. As long as you realize this unit has some limitations based on the grand scale of all the information it is expected to contain, you should not be disappointed.

If you have addresses or business names of places you hope to locate in a city you will be traveling to, don't hesitate to feed them into the unit in advance and save them in your favorites file. That can assure you that the info you want is indeed in the unit's data base.

And if the unit starts telling you to "turn around", take a glance and see if the map shows you to be driving off the roadway. Getting the voice command to turn around will often occur if you are driving on a new bypass or roadway that the unit does not yet know about. With the road you are driving upon not being in the data base, the unit becomes confused and knows only to tell you to turn around so you can go back to the area where the unit thinks you left the roadway. Don't let this alarm you the first time it happens.

I chose this model because another reviewer wrote that the loudspeaker is larger on these non-Bluetooth models.

ANY of these Garmins beats any of the GPSs that come from the car manufacturer (OEM). I just saw the one that comes with the new Cadillac and it was horrible. (I bet it cost more than this Nuvi, too.) The brand-new Cadillac driver asked if I knew where there was a McDonald's, so I found "points of interest" on his GPS, but then I had to *spell* "McDonald's" and up came McDonald's furniture store, etc. --no restaurant. On the Garmin I just hit points-of-interest and then restaurants, and it finds restaurants I never knew existed, with the nearest ones on top. The OEM unit didn't have categories. On this Nuvi 260w, I can even specify Mexican or Italian restaurants, etc.

This unit can be easily replaced when it becomes outmoded. (I'll just come back here and buy another one.) I like being able to take it in the house where I can look up addresses on the computer and program them into the GPS. I like the way it looks on my dash. And it's SAFER TO USE because I'm LOOKING OUT THE WINDSHIELD, rather than down at the dashboard, when I use it!

The foreign languages work great; there are more languages available for the text than the speech. For example, it will display in Thai but not speak Thai.

This is a great, affordable navigation device. Speaker is nice and loud, screen is bright and clear, touchscreen is very responsive. Device worked immediately right out of the box, it's easy to set up and very intuitive. No problems after about a month of use. It has been very helpful (especially last weekend, heading up north to the cabin for Memorial Day weekend....took lots of backroads to avoid heavy traffic on the freeway. While I was influenced by the reviews here, my final motivation to buy this Garmin model 260W was when it was offered at $149. I was initially happy with it but eventually discovered that it was giving false readings on the estimated distance between my starting point and destination. I tested other units and models and seemed like all Garmin exhibited same fault. Must be the software.
If you have a Garmin, any, you can easily determine if your unit is doing same thing. Try this:
1) press "where to?"
2) go to the "most recent addresses" or enter a new address if you don't have any data in the "most recent..."
3) in the "most recent addresses", it should show the estimated distances for various destinations you may have in it. Note down the distance of just one, and then choose that as your destination.
4) After choosing your destination your unit should go into route/guide mode, which should then display the speed info.
5) press the Speed info to display the other metrics, the top number or somewhere above the speed (sorry I returned mine already so I'm just recalling from memory) there's the distance info. Compare that distance from the one you noted down from the one displayed on the "most recent address" page. Mine were different, if yours displayed the same info on both then you're one lucky one. However, I would guess that they're not.The one displayed with the speed is the correct one.

A simpler way to determine the false info is by just comparing the distance displayed on the "most recent addresses" page with one provided by Google Maps.

Other than the incorrect distance info I thought the way it chose the routes for you left a lot to be desired. Not all the time but sometimes it gave ridiculously long or stupid routes to get to my destinations.

I never dreamed I'd own a GPS device. I love maps and I know how to use them. For decades, my husband and I have traveled happily and easily. He's a great driver, although he's myopic and depends on me to read the street signs when we're on the road. We've never been a couple fumbling with a map while he's at the wheel. But now, I've reached middle age and I just can't see the print on maps without reading glasses. And I can't see the street signs with them. I wasn't fumbling with the map, I was fumbling with my glasses - on, off, on, off - D'OH! can't see that sign because I forgot to take them off. His driving skills haven't suffered, but he has no patience with this glasses on, glasses off thing.

So with a vacation to a new locale looming, I decided to buy a GPS and bought the widescreen model to ensure I'd be able to see it. I also wanted one that was easy to use, though I've been told they're all easy to use. I asked a few friends here on Amazon for their opinions, and they helped me decide on this model.

We're absolutely delighted with it. Of course, we took a map too, but I put it in the glovebox. With the unit placed on the dash with the Garmin Portable Friction Dashboard Mount for nüvi Series and StreetPilot C5XX Series GPS Navigators (C530, C550, and C580), off we went, guided by a female voice and my eagle (distance) vision. No problems at all, and guess what? I didn't even have to tell him when to turn because the Garmin told him! Wow, talk about a relaxing trip!

I did use the unit in my car before our trip to acquaint myself with it. I found the features very intuitive. My husband, well, he keeps saying he's going to take it with him so he can gain some expertise, but that darn middle age! He goes out the door without it, so he really hasn't learned to use it yet, but he's not afraid to use it. That's a giant leap for him.

One thing I really would love to see on this is a compass. Just an icon that says which way is north, because unlike with a map, I have no sense of where I am. Frankly, I don't really need it, I'm just used to having an arrow pointing to North on a map.

So I'm giving this 4 stars. I'd give it 5, but it should have come with a case. It does come with a car charger. Oh, and by the way, I use Wally World eyeglass cleaner to get the fingerprints off the screen. This is the second Garmin product I have used; the first is the Garmin nuvi 200 that my mother owns. I'll use it as a comparison from time to time.

I purchased this product from Amazon when planning my move from Maine to Virginia, a drive of over 600 miles. I had made the drive down once before using the aforementioned Garmin 200, and after seeing how invaluable the GPS proved to be in the first case, I decided I needed one for myself.

The nuvi 260 is widescreen, and has considerably more screen real estate than does the nuvi 200. You don't really notice too much while you are just viewing the map, since most of the detail is concentrated in the middle of the screen anyways. It does make text entry easier - the widescreen is a better analogue to a standard keyboard, and by default the touch screen keyboard is laid out in QWERTY style. You can switch it back to alphabetical if you wish, but I found the QWERTY to be instantly usable.

The other main distinction between the 260 and 200, and more generally between it and the cheaper models, is the text to speech feature. What this means in laymen's terms is that instead of saying "Turn right in 400 yards", it says "Turn right on Wendy Lane in 400 yards", or "Arriving at Best Buy on right" as opposed to "Arriving at destination on right." Hearing the streets announced is very helpful; when driving through crowded urban areas, there are often multiple streets in quick succession, so knowing you have a turn in 400 yards isn't always very helpful. Hearing the name of the street ensures you make the turn. I have definitely missed turns or made the wrong turn before when using the nuvi 200; that has not yet happened with this 260 model. The voice is slightly robotic, but it's not distractingly bad.

Finally, I just want to say that this has been invaluable for my move, not just for getting me down to Virginia safe and sound. Half of its utility has come after I arrived. When you are in a new area and without Internet access, it's very hard to know where things are. With this unit, you can browse nearby attractions, e.g. the local library, without knowing specifically what you are looking for. Not only does it then show you the way there, but it also lists the phone number for said locations. Again, when you are without Internet and telephone book, this feature is priceless.

I wish this featured traffic integration out of the box; I believe you need to get the nuvi 255 or similar unit for that. In general it's very hard to understand the numbering convention that Garmin uses for its products. Higher doesn't necessarily mean more advanced.

This Garmin GPS was my choice as I live in Mexico and need a GPS for navigating in urban areas. I have had it for nine months.

1. The Mexico maps are about 85% accurate in the major cities. They attempt sometimes to send you the wrong way down one-way streets, and give confusing directions at traffic circles. Some streets do not appear on the maps, and names are sometimes misspelled. In addition, Mexican street names are often combinations of words, but the Garmin cannot determine what street you want, even for major streets. Nevertheless, in confusing Mexican cities with heavy traffic, it is an enormous help, and will deliver you close to where you want to go. In general, in major cities the Garmin GPS can get you within 2 or 3 blocks of any address, and one block of most.

2. Between the cities, the maps are far less accurate and omit some major four-lane routes (e.g., MX145). Detail falls off rapidly outside any major city. Thus, while the GPS can substitute for the Guia Roji street atlas of a major city, it cannot substitute for the Guia Roji road atlas of Mexico.

In sum, the Garmin GPS with Mexico map is worth buying for navigation in major cities, but cannot be trusted for navigation between them.

The Garmin 260W also has difficulty finding the satellites, with no obstacles, and at 20 degrees north latitude where the satellites are almost directly overhead. At times the Garmin takes 3 resets and up to 30 minutes to find the satellites. There is no predictability to this.

I have used a Magellan GPS a few years ago in a rental car but bought this one on sale and thinking that it would do the job. While I am relatively happy with this unit here are my thoughts.
Pro:
1. Clear understandable voice

2. Love the ability to find a store/restaurant from wherever you are. This is the best feature! In a strange town I have needed to find a Home-Depot or a Wal-mart and this unit guides you there and then back to where you started wonderfully (by re-selecting your start loc)

3. Speed indication, although it is hard to read.

4. Time to destination, quite accurate.

5. Distance to next turn.

Con:
1. The unit calls out street names, however the voice inexplicably, incredibly calls out "Doctor" for all names that have a "Dr." in them. Of course it is "Drive" as in "Turn left on River Drive" but instead you hear "Turn left on River Doctor". Someone should have been fired over that mess up.

2. Volume doesn't go loud enough. Between road noise and moderate music it is difficult to hear sometimes.

3. The turn indications are unclear. While the unit is talking you through the lead up to the turn, when the turn comes it is not clear if it is this turn you are supposed to take or the one just ahead. On a number of occasions I have missed a turn because of this. The Magellan has the tone/bong signal that occurs at the turn making it very easy to figure out when to turn.

4. Seems to take forever to find satellites and sometimes in the middle of driving. Not sure if this is any worse than other units though.

5. Takes you along terrible routes sometimes. Down tiny roads with lots of stops when a better route is nearby, and that is set to quickest route, not shortest. Sometimes taking a freeway exit, then tells you to get right back on the freeway. (Other units may do the same though).

6. Power connector on the back, kind of awkward, the side would be better for me.

7. Doesn't seem to have distance remaining to destination.

8. Couldn't see how to set "Current position" so that I could explore the city I am in and then have it take me back to where I started.

I am going to purchase a Magellan next time.
